DIY Chipping Attachment for Garbage Can

Since we live in the woods, we knew that we would be clearing some areas for buildings, gardens, etc. We bought a Stanley CH7 chipper/shredder last year and have been giving it a workout.
To make use of the chips, we needed a good way to catch them since they tend to blow all over the place without some sort of purpose build container. I use a 31 gallon metal trash can with a homemade 1/8″ hardware cloth funnel to catch all of those wonderful wood chips. It works really well….much better than anything else I’ve tried to rig up.

The chipper is much easier to use with our funnel going from the chipper into the garbage can.
The bottom of the chipper funnel has four semi-circular tabs that keep it from sliding around on the trash can. The 1/8″ hardware cloth is small enough to keep the chips from blowing out while still letting all the forced air out; otherwise, the chipper would blow the top off the trash can.
The hardware cloth is sandwiched in between two pieces of  1/2″ OSB.
The finished chips ready for use.
