We’ve been looking for hazelnut trees for quite some time now. Two years ago we received one as a gift, and then we ordered a couple more, but they never showed up. Finally, this year we successfully ordered three more from Willis Orchards, and they showed up today via Fed Ex. They were shipped bare root -see pic- and we planted all three of them on the east side of the orchard today. They will be a productive addition to our food forest in about 5 years! We eat quite a few nuts, so the projected 25 lbs per “tree” harvest will benefit our diets significantly. I write tree in parenthesis because they are really more like a bush at only 15 to 20 feet tall. We’ll keep a cage around them for the first year or two in case the deer like them too.
Filberts are one of my favorite nuts!
