Harvesting Turmeric Root

We planted some turmeric in a container this spring on a whim, and we ended up with a fair amount of turmeric root. Unlike Ginger, which is harvested every year, turmeric is best to grow for two years before harvesting the rhizomes. We were impatient and harvested on the first year.

We use them in green smoothies, but many people use the root to make turmeric milk for treating arthritis and other ailments. Here’s a milk recipe I want to try.

Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory. You can read more about it, here.

We wash off the dirt and trim off the rhizomes. We store them on the counter, not the fridge, just like our ginger.
