Making Poly Tunnels To Extend Our Growing Season

We don’t have a large permanent greenhouse yet or enough space in our little cabin to get seedlings going early. We decided that making little temporary greenhouses (a.k.a poly tunnels) would be the next best thing. We built ours over existing raised beds, but any growing space could be covered with a poly tunnel.
The finished poly tunnel built over a 4′ x 8′ raised bed is ready for seedlings. They are really easy to build as you’ll see.
For the frame of the poly tunnel we used four 1/2 inch pieces of 10 foot long PVC per raised bed, and 8 pieces of 2 1/2 foot long rebar.
About 2 feet of each rebar stake was pounded into the ground just outside of the raised bed to accept the 1/2″ PVC pipe (10′ long). The PVC pipe just slides over the rebar as shown.
2×2’s (8 ft. long) were used to weight down the plastic and make it easy to partially roll up for ventilation. The 6 mil greenhouse plastic was screwed in between the 2×2’s. These run the length of the raised bed on both sides.

2″ clamps are used at each end to secure all the excess plastic on each end. We cut our 6 mil plastic to 12′ x 16′ which covered the beds perfectly. Done! It’s time to get those seedlings started this weekend.
