We didn’t know if Bandit, our young Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix, would be able to peacefully coexist with cats and free range chickens. The breed was used in South Africa and known for their ability keep a lion at bay while waiting for their owner to make the kill.
Bandit seems to be making the transition to a low-key farm dog really well. After quite a few hours of training with the chickens and cats we feel confident that he is going to do just fine. The keys to his success have been lots of positive reinforcement, learning the command ‘Leave it’, and adopting a few behaviors and routines for ourselves to ensure that he isn’t pack leader over us.
