DIY Gas Generator Shed

We built a 20’x20′ workshop that is mostly powered by a gas generator. We needed a place to run the generator and keep it securely locked and out of the weather. I built this generator house years ago and it has worked great.

The generator shed is framed with cedar 2″ x 2″ lumber and covered with 1/2 inch pressure treated plywood. One sidewall is on hinges and lays flat to roll the generator in and out. The generator can run inside the house when completely closed, or sitting on the sidewall (preferred way).

This picture shows how I usually run it with the generator pulled out onto the sidewall. A tarp attached to the roof on one side and two t-posts on the other allow me to run it like this on rainy days.
The generator can be run inside the house as shown, because it has 4 high cfm fans built in. Two intake fans (seen above) and two exhaust fans on the back wall in addition to multiple openings for passive intake and exhaust. It is much quieter when run like this.
Fresh air intake covered with hardware cloth to keep out bugs.
The back of the generator house has a large opening for the engine exhaust. The two exhaust fans are mounted up high. The top part below the roof is all open to exhaust heat. All openings are covered with hardware cloth.
The 4 fans are AC Infinity 110 cfm muffin fans measuring 120×120 millimeters. They are daisy chained together and plugged into the generator. Homemade plastic shrouds keep the rain out.
Power cord is fed into the generator house through this opening when running the generator closed up and inside. It’s an old piece from a wood chipper’s intake chute…it’s whatever works.
