Winter Storm Fern And The Clean-up

Winter Storm Fern blew through at the end of January depositing a lot of ice and some snow. In our area the grid power was out for about 5 ½ days. Enough ice accumulated on trees and rooftops to cause significant damage. We weren’t spared as we lost several trees, and many large branches. Some of them came crashing down on our front porch, wood shed and greenhouse. It was surreal to hear a consistent repetition of trees and branches breaking, which sounded like firecrackers or  gunshots, as the weight of ice became too much to bear. Here are some pictures of the damage and our clean-up.

A pine branch came crashing through the greenhouse plastic. No damage to the frame, but it will need to be recovered.
The top of a pine tree laying across the road to the back of the property.
Near miss for the truck.
Front porch damage.
Garden fence damage.
We have quite a few piles of branches to chip.
12 wheelbarrows of wood chips and counting. This is our favorite mulch in the raised garden beds.
Some of the trees downed by this storm were big enough to mill into boards.
Three 10-foot logs milled into 1″ thick boards…ready to stack for air drying.
